17th Biannual Championship Show in Kyoto!

お待たせしました!
Official Pics and News from the 17th Japanese National Ferret Championship!!

Overview:
There are many ferret shows across Japan, but the two main Championship shows that the AFA judges participate in are held in the Spring and Fall every year. They are normally held in the southern area on Japan's main island since the President of the JFA is from that area and she has to haul all that stuff around.

This Fall's Championship Highlights:
. lots and lots of fuzzies !!!!
. Tea Ceremony corner
. Large Drawing Contest (the one with the cups and tickets)
. A HUGE "Gallery" were private individuals could showcase their handmade goods. Some were for sale, some not. This was really amazing. Wait until you see the pictures from that.

This event marks the first time the Championship Show was held in the historic capital of Japan, Kyoto. As such, not surprisingly, there were a lot of "extras". Frankly, it was the best show I have been to to date. However, although I had a camera this time, you will have to wait to see the extras. My computer is still not fixed. (But it is on my New Year's Resolutions List!) In the meantime, please enjoy the contest winners from the "Anything Goes" Photo Contest below.

It goes without saying, but these pages are in Japanese. Instructions and translations provided by me.

CONTEST PHOTOS
1st Place Title: "PokaPoka"Poka Poka describes how you feel when you are all nice and warm inside. The camera person writes s/he fell into a doze and s/he didn't wake up at all! "A sleeping baby is a growing baby!" Judges comments: By far the highest score. Just seeing the picture is healing. An incredible sleeping face. *I so agree.
2nd Place Title: "Peach"The camera person reports that s/he saw their slightly overweight belly and thought,"Seems to resemble something..." Judges comments: Such a delicious looking belly. But overweight is NG! Please see they go on a gentle diet. *Typically, the Japanese associate a peach with the human tush so I thought this one was particularly funny.
3rd Place Title: "What Kindof Dream"The camera person reports that instead of a bed, s/he used a cap. With the tongue hanging out like that, s/he must have been eating some yummy treat in their dreams. Judges comments: Very cute the way s/he is snuggled perfectly inside the cap. I wonder if s/he could eat treats in their dreams.
JFA Special CommendationTitle: "Tomorrow Brings Tomorrow's Winds"The camera person says, "In the morning, when I open the curtains they often look out. It was good weather so they stayed like that for a bit." Judges comments: I can almost hear them saying, "The weather is so nice today!", "Let us play alot today too!". The morning light adds a soft finish.

Hope you enjoyed a taste of this years' Fall Championship! Stay tuned for more!!
Especially pictures from the "Gallery". ;)

Computer Down For Repairs

As of 12/12/2007 windoze FATALLY crapped out on me. *again*.

Fortunately, as I am already well aware that windoze is worse then useless, when it died the first time just 14 months ago, I had a backup plan - I squished windoze onto 10GIG of my system and put the less unstable Linux SUSE OS on the rest. ;)

Geeky stuff follows...
Unfortunately, windoze was so corrupted this time that a simple reinstall didn't work. I was forced to format that drive entirely and lose anything i had there. It wasn't much- I know better than to keep important files ona windoze system, but Losing Netscape bookmarks (autosaved to windoze HD) really killed me though when I realized it. It's so easy to backup yet I put it off just a few days before windoze died. T_T T_T T_T And worse, windows being the monopolzing system that it is, it "rewrote" the MBR meaning I couldn't boot my still useable LINUX system until I fixed the MBR too. At that point I decided to finally take the plunge and go WINDOZE-FREE!! Like quitting smoking - I was on the 'patch' for awhile, using a measly 10GIG of my 60GIG system for windoze, and now I'm ready to get rid of the 'patch' and go WINDOZE-FREE. XD SUSE will reabsorb the 10G windoze HD and convert it to mere document storage. XD

Safe to read once again...
Although I'm sure some of you have been enjoying the break, enjoy it while you can. ;) I'll be up and fully functional by the end of Decemeber. Right now i'm booting from CD to my original SUSE installed OS so I'm semi-functional. I just need a large block of time to download the updates and install the updated version of SUSE and that's not going to happen until XMAS vacation. :P

Until then, cheers!
Wishing a Safe and Happy Holidays to You and Yours =)

OMG! Hit and Run!!!

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Ok, I know I said I was going to flood the page with goodies from the Kyoto show, but this was too much.

I have a friend who always posts his ferret videos, usually 2-3 a week. In following the chronicles of Kogane ("little bell", Albino) and Kotarou (Sable Mitt) as usual, I came across this one towards the end of summer.

Apparently, Kogane, being mistress of all she surveys, kicked him out from her sleep spot behind the fridge.

I swear, if it had been me, I would have passed out. 6.6

Ferret Flood!

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

The 17th BiAnnual Japanese Championship Ferret Show is OVER!!

Somehow we made it through again. I don't know how, but we did.

Good news is not only do I have a LOT to report, but this time I was armed with a camera. I easily took 100 pictures which was a life saver since I was so busy running around that I although I "saw" many things, I didn't actually have time to "look".

Anyway, be prepared for the a flood of pictures not just from the official JFA site, but from an eyewitness's account (mine).

OTANOSHIMINI~!

Ferret Fotography

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

This month has been all about preparing for the Fall JFA National Championships. I am happy to report that I received a digital camera as a gift so in addition to the JFA pictures from the show I will be posting, there will also (hopefully) be some of my own personal pics.

And on that note, I would like to introduce you to a friends page. He not only has beautiful ferrets, but has quite a way with the camera and has taken some beautiful stills. There are too many to choose from but I am partial to the one of Sarah with the dark green background (fabulous color work there) and also the full body shot of Sarah peering straight up bathed in bright sunlight.

Welcome to Sarah's Space.

Lymphoma: Glandulars Supplements

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

An acquaintance of mine on veg.web is a big believer in both natural feeding AND a certain Dr. Goldstein, DVM. Dr. Goldstein advocates both natural feeding and his own version of natural healing using raw, healthy animal glands. You can buy a cheap used copy of his book on amazon.com to learn about his theory of illness and healing.

Although his book presents several good topics about cancer, nutrition, and the problem with over-vaccination that I can agree with, I personally do not buy into the glandular approach to healing. That being said, since animal (usually bovine) glands are just food substances, even if it does not help, it does not do any harm either. For that reason alone, it is worth a try, I think.

Besides, if your ferret was on a natural diet, they would be eating these bits and parts already. If your ferret is on a kibble diet, you could just consider this a nutritional supplement.

ADMINISTRATION & DOSING

From D. Fasano, DVM regarding her use of glandulars in the treatment of dogs & cats: "Glandulars are very safe and food like but I usually dose down from the human amount and give about 1/10 to 1/4 the dose once or twice a day."

Personally, since the capsules/tablets on the market are available in human doses ranging from 140-200mg, I think 10mg once (under 1kg) or twice a day (over 1kg) for a ferret is reasonable. Since they are capsules or tablets, you would need to crush them and then administer. (Amount is crushed and then eye-balled for approximate measure. Remember it is only a 'food substance'.) If you go through a holistic vet, however, you may be able to purchase it in powered form already.

The Miller Pharmacal brand below is what the one vet I know uses, so that is a reputable brand. I also know that Solaray happens to be one of the long-standing reputable brand names with good quality control also; however, read their label closely! Solaray tends to add other 'herbs' to the mix that may not be appropriate for your ferret.

PURCHASING

ALMOST ALL GLANDULARS CAN BE BOUGHT THROUGH THESE 3 SITES:

SPECIFIC GLANDS ONLY:
Lymph: HerbsPro
Adrenal (very hard to find pure adrenal): iHealthTree
Heart: amazon

COMMENTS

One user shared their thoughts about the glandulars system on the FHL here:
The basic idea is using prepared/concetrated forms of the organ affected. For example: giving dried liver to an animal with liver disease, or giving adrenal, pancreas etc etc. One can use glandulars in treating hyperadrenal OR hypoadrenal--the idea is that you are supplementing an unhealthy organ with healthy.
...
I have used glandulars with some success but I will say that they are most useful in treating chronic conditions, they are NOT a cure, and I don't think they would be effective against cancer, except perhaps inhelping the pet's overall system to better fight disease--sort of in a tonic type way.

Other therapies including glandulars discussed here on the FHL.

Lymphoma: Turmeric as supportive therapy

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

TURMERIC ROOT
Latin: Curcuma longa
Chinese: Jiang huang / Yu jin

WHAT IT DOES: Turmeric root is bitter in taste and warming in action. It strongly reduces inflammation and mucus in all parts of the body, protects the liver, lungs and intestines, and helps prevent and treat cancer.

RATING: Gold

SAFETY ISSUES: Due to mucin-reducing effects, do not use the concentrated extract (curcumin) or oil in high doses, especially if you have bile duct obstruction, gall stones, or stomach ulcers. Use turmeric as a spice freely.

Turmeric is a common tuberous vegetable spice used all over the world. It stimulates gastric juices, and it is used in Indian households in most vegetable dishes as an anti-food poisoning agent that also reduces mucous formation.

Turmeric root is used externally by TAM doctors to treat skin diseases, and as a plaster to reduce swelling. It is a valuable anti-inflammatory. Modern research has shown it to be a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hepatotoxic herb, useful in the treatment of many inflammation-related conditions such as diabetes, hepatitis, arthritis, diarrhea, psoriasis, eczema, asthma and smoking related lung inflammation (Pandey et al., 1996).

Turmeric rhizome is yellow in color and egg-shaped (called jiang huang), with numerous secondary garlic bulb-like projections (called yu jin). TCM doctors report that these two parts have different medicinal properties. Though similar in action, the larger jiang huang is used to invigorate the blood, relieve menstrual cramps, and treat the pain and swelling associated with trauma. The smaller yu jin is cooler in action and used more to break up blood stasis and relieve constrained liver energy with symptoms of internal tension.
READ THE COMPLETE ENTRY HERE

Petra M. Burgmann, DVM on turmeric:
"The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties of turmeric and curcumin are undergoing intense research. Several studies indicate that curcumin can suppress tumor initiation, promotion and metastasis of a number of types of cancer cells. Pharmacologically, curcumin has been found to be fairly safe, with human clinical trials indicating no dose-limiting toxicity when administered at doses up to 10 g/day. All of these studies suggest that curcumin has enormous potential in the prevention and therapy of cancer. Tumeric could be added to any herbal anti-cancer regime at a dose of 100 milligrams a day."
Taken directly from Dr. Petra's article, download here.

II. CHOOSEN THERAPY & DOSING:

Do you have a one gram spoon? If not a trick learned from my favorite TCM doctor is that 1/2 US teaspoon is equal to 1 gram. Just measure it with the spoon, put it on wax paper, and 'cut it' into halves over and over until you have 10 doses like it was ferret cocaine . The rest can go in one of those weekly pill boxes for storage. Slightly too much or too little won't hurt him so you can be not so perfect in cutting it and not worry.

You can dissolve that 1/10 gram in a little warm water and administer as is (good luck with that.), mixed with treat or oil of choice, or hidden in food. Dissolving in warm water and letting sitting for a few minutes is recommended, but not required. Instructions on dissolving from the San Jiu company can be downloaded here. Of course, as I said above, you do not want to dissolve it like that. Just take the amount of extract you need and dissolve in a little warm water covered for 2-3 minutes is probably easiest. It does say to refrigerate the extract packets though.

EXAMPLE DOSING 1

EXAMPLE DOSING 2:
Referring to the Tillotson information above about the 2 different types of turmeric and other related studies, the following plan was outlined for patient 00. Explanation in brief below:

Actually, under TCM they identify two types of turmeric root. They both have slightly different actions. In all my resources, although turmeric is recommended for use in cancer supportive treatment, I can't find a single source that specifies which one. I choose the Yujin form since although both are anti-inflammatories, according to TCM theory, cancer is brought about through (amoung other things) liver stagnation. As you can see from the Tillotson book quote Yu jin works by relieving the liver. Hence the choice of Yu jin form of turmeric over the Jiang huang form.

III. TIMING OF ADMINISTERING HERBAL THERAPIES:

Most homeopathic remedies are best given at least 20 minutes before… a meal. Ideally there should be no food residue in the mouth. Drop the liquid directly into the animal's mouth or on the gums... If this proves impossible for your companion, then mix the remedy with a small amount of food or a treat. (Clip taken from the Only Natural Pet store.)

It should be noted that giving herbal medicines 20+ minutes before any food is ingested has been standard operating procedure in over 3000 years of Chinese medicine, even for humans. Of course, in the interest of actually getting them to take it at all, we frequently bow to necessity and mix it with food as in the case of patient 00. At least they are taking it, even with reduced effect. It is always better to not cause anymore stress.

IV. POSSIBLE DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Always double check with your Holistic DVM first, but Minimal.
Check the links on the right in the Complimentary & Supportive Therapies section under the Drug Interactions / Toxic Reactions / Poison Control subheading to research it. And remember to search under the Latin name or Chinese name to make sure you are getting the most accurate information. More links to be added to that section in the future.

Case Study 00 - treating mulitple diseases

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Patient: Male, Champagne Ferret, Private Breeder approx. 4 years old, ---- gm
Diagnosed Aliments: Lymphoma, Cardiomyopathy (dilated with a faulty valve)
Highly Suspected Aliments: Adrenal (not officially tested for but HIGHLY likely)

He has two vets. A general vet and a holistic vet. The holistic vet is Dr. Ronald Anders in Ohio. My only complaint so far is that this vet recommended a way WAY higher starting dosage than is normally prescribed. His body is already under enough stress without that. It was knocked it down immediately after the first night's scare to the usual starting dose of 1/8 a US teaspoon every day. They plan to up it to the higher prescribed dose gradually. Details to follow.

TCM DIAGNOSIS:
TCM to address KIDNEY YIN; LIVER QI; LIVER BLOOD; SPLEEN QI;AND PROMOTE YIN.
He is addressing kidney, liver and spleen. The spleen is the root of problems with digestion (the whole system from start to finish. It controls digestion.) and the kidney is the root of the problem for the heart and liver.

His whole mouth is purple. (due to blood stagnation) I also asked him if he thought a lot of his belly weight/mass was fluid, and he thought it was entirely possible. He said the fluid was part of the problem, in that it affected the heat of the body. The fluid tries to cool it down. On the follow-up visit, the holistic vet said he felt the bloating in the belly was fluid. (Dr Higgins, the conventional vet, felt it was fat).

REGARDING FLUID BUILDUP:
Bloating looks like a ferret whose organs are swelling up from disease and he is just 'big'. He is hard. Sometimes, it looks like he is pretty uncomfortable. My best guess, is, it is a little bit of several things going on. Enlarged liver, spleen, and other organs, extra fat laying down due to the pred, and a bit of extra fluid, although more furosemide should keep that pulled off.

As to what is causing the fluid build up, pred will cause fluid retention. A poorly functioning heart will cause fluid retention, and lymphoma, itself, will cause fluid leakage. Plus, if his kidneys are not functioning properly, that can also cause fluid build-up.

CURRENT HOLISTIC THERAPIES
started 09/19/2007

General anti-inflammatory: TURMERIC
dosage: 1/10 gram every day once a day. Ideally given on an empty stomach, but bowing to necessity, given with food in this case.

Glandular Therapy: Adrenal, Lymph, Heart
dosage: 10mg of EACH every day once a day. (Amount is crushed and then eye-balled for approximate measure. Remember it is only a 'food substance'.)

Essiac
dosage: 08/17/2007 - 10/18/2007. Stopped after 2 months of use. (Previously, 1.0ml twice a day.) Restarted on ------ at ---- dosage levels.

2 Chinese Medicines:
dosage: 1/8 US teaspoon (1/4 gram) every day once a day for first month. (The two formulas are mixed together.) After the first month dose increased to same amount twice a day.

Yes, by reading the Chinese name, I can tell you this is the same formula as the one right above. This is just a classic example of the 'new lettering system' wrecking havoc on the English name. Another example you might remember is how Beijing changed to its current name of Peiking. Same place, they just changed the way the wrote it in English.

CURRENT CONVENTIONAL THERAPIES

Furosemide, for the heart
dosage: 0.2 ml 4 times a day
Enalapril, for the heart (probably the most helpful heart med for him)
dosage: 1/8 of a 2.5 mg tablet 1 times a day at bedtime
Prednisolone, for lymphoma
dosage: 1.0 ml in morning feeding
Metoclopramide
dosage: 0.5 ml 3 times a day

THROWAWAY THINGS: Paper towels are always in huge demand at rescues.

BEDDING: Bedding can be any soft cloth without buttons or zippers. I frequently used my old Tshirts, or other unadorned cotton shirts in addition to normal ferret bedding.

FLEECE THROWS: pieces of fleece can be bought cheaply at Joann's fabrics or other such related stores. But please try to wash them once before sending. Often these new materials are packaged with chemicals for storage by the manufacturer and then just put out as is for sale.

Thanks again for and and all help.

HUGE RESCUE in USA, 700 need your HELP

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Yes folks, that is 700 ferrets rescued from appalling conditions at a minor mass breeder. They have all been dumped on one little ferret rescue in Ohio.

The rescue operator is asking for help of any kind, either monetary donations or adoptions or just plain simple help with the work load.

Here is a link to a YouTube video showing conditions at this breeder (I have heard parts of it are hard to watch. Personally I can't watch these things. Just hearing about parts of it is enough to give me nightmares.): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eADmummyIkY

Anything you can do, even if it is just spreading the news to others who care, will be of great help to these ferrets. Every tiny bit helps in such a situation. Details are enclosed below.

-----------------PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY-----------------

Doug McKay, the notorious ferret breeder in Ohio who had been the subject of numerous protests and investigations over conditions at his ferretry, has finally thrown in the towel by dumping 700 (yes, that is seven hundred) unneutered, unvaccinated ferrets at a ferret rescue in Ohio. This is, to my knowledge, the largest single ferret rescue in American history.

The guidelines for adoption to be followed are:

1. A spay/neuter contract will have to be signed and you will be required to have them spayed/neutered within 60 days. Proof of spay/neuter must be sent to the shelter upon completion. Kits need to be spayed/neutered by 4 months of age. If you are picking up ferrets for someone other than yourself you must bring a signed contract by them.

2. Due to the large quantity, I cannot accommodate special color requests. I would prefer you take ferrets how they are grouped by cages if at all possible.

3. There will be no adoption fees, but a donation is requested.

I will be extremely busy taking care of these ferrets so I will not be answering e-mails other than adoption requests. If you are unable to adopt a ferret donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.

Thank you in advance.

Animal Chip Implants Linked to Cancer

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Even though this is only a preliminary study not definitive, I find this both concerning and disappointing. Concerning because cancer has been such an oppressive enemy for so long, disappointing in that yet again a government official is playing both sides. To top it off, I have heard many cities in the US are now making micro-chipping MANDATORY for pets. And previous to that, many people just jumped on board because of how useful it would be if their animal companions got lost or stolen.

I wonder (and worry) if eventually they will not find a similar problem in the melatonin chips that are wildly popular with ferret folk?

This weekend the Associated Press broke a story suggesting a link between VeriChip's implantable chip technology in animals and the formation of cancerous tumors. The story has been picked up widely, from the mainstream media to tech blogs to pet publications. Following is what the RFID industry needs to know.

From 1996 to 2006, a handful of studies reported incidences of tumors in lab mice and rats that had been implanted with chips. Specifically, malignant tumors (sarcomas) developed near and around the chips, in some cases completely enveloping them. A 1998 study in the US found the incidence of cancer to be higher than 10 percent in a group of 177 tested mice. A 1997 German study revealed a cancer incidence of one percent in a group of over four thousand, with the researchers noting that the tumors "are clearly due to the implanted microchips." And just last year a study in France saw 4.1 percent of 1,260 chipped mice develop cancer.

The significance of these findings is not just the potential danger to chipped pets, but the fact that the technology in question is essentially the same as that used in the VeriChip product for humans.

Note, however, that the findings are preliminary and do not definitively condemn the technology as a cause of cancer in animals or in humans. One study said as much, cautioning, "Blind leaps from the detection of tumors to the prediction of human health risk should be avoided." Ohio State University veterinarian oncologist Dr. Cheryl London commented, "It's much easier to cause cancer in mice than it is in people. So it may be that what you're seeing in mice represents an exaggerated phenomenon of what may occur in people." Perhaps most significant of all is the fact that millions of pets have been chipped over the last fifteen years, and no widespread problem has surfaced. (Although after the attention this story will bring, new cases might well be uncovered.)

Still, the studies warrant further investigation, according to a number of cancer researchers whom the AP asked to review and interpret the research. Dr. Robert Benezra, head of the Cancer Biology Genetics Program at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, told the AP, "There's no way in the world, having read this information, that I would have one of those chips implanted in my skin, or in one of my family members." Others were less dramatic. National Cancer Institute veterinary oncologist Dr. Chand Khanna acknowledged that the studies "suggest some reason to be concerned about tumor formations" and advocated further investigation. Forensic pathologist Dr. Oded Foreman of the Jackson Laboratory in Maine said that there "might be a little hint that something real is happening here."

One curious wrinkle to the story is how the studies have gone relatively unnoticed, even by VeriChip itself...

Sugar Substitutes and Safety

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

We all know xylitol is bad for animals (specifically dogs and probably others).

Off hand, does anyone know whether erythritol is dangerous for animals, too?

It is another no-calorie sweetner that has no effect on glycemic index.
"In the body, erythritol is absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine, and then for the most part excreted unchanged in the urine. Because erythritol is normally absorbed before it enters the large intestine, it does not normally cause laxative effects as are often experienced after over-consumption of other sugar alcohols and most people will consume erythritol with no side effects. This is unique, as other sugar alcohols are not absorbed directly by the body in this manner. " (thefreelibrary.com)

It is often used as the main ingredient in a popular sweetener Rakanto where the second ingredient is the extract if the Asian fruit Rakan (Scientific name: Siraitia grosvenori, Chinese name: Luo Han Guo). It is interesting to note that Siraitia grosvenori has also shown anticarcinogenic activity. And although it is not a common problem with ferrets, a recent paper also points to an "antidiabetic effect of long-term supplementation".

However, why compare xylitol to erythritol?

Although the chemical makeup is different from xylitol - xylitol is C5 H12 O5 and erythritol is C4 H10 O4 - BOTH xylitol and erythritol fall into the category of "sugar alcohols". Because of that, even though liver toxicity in dogs is occurs because they don't have the liver enzymes necessary to deal with xylitol, I wonder whether xylitol and erythritol might share some of the same properties in terms of safety?

Chinese Medicine & Dosing: one example

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

I am very excited to share this with you all. As I mentioned to the site owner, even in Japan where TCM and Kanpou (Chinese herbal medicine) have a long traditional history and strong scientific background, most applications of it in animals have focused on cats and dogs.

From Four Paws Five Directions, the most advice one gets about dosing herbal medicine is "for small-sized dogs and cats use 1/3 or less of a 10 gram human dose." (translated from Japanese by M. Diamantis) How did that number get decided upon? Cheryl Schwartz, DVM judges a large dog to be about the same weight as a human (60 kg) and thus able to handle a full human dosage of 10 grams. Thus a "large" dog would get the full 10 grams spread out over 3 times a day, or about 3 1/3 grams per serving. A "medium sized" would get half a human dosage (5 grams), again spread out over 3 times.

I dislike vagueness in dealing with medicine. I think we all do. What constitutes a "small" or a "medium sized animal? Where is the cutoff for "small". Ferrets would likely be classified as "extra-small" to "tiny" size, wouldn't they? What does that mean for them?

What I am finally happy to share with you is this bit of information from the all-about-ferrets blog:
"according to the specialist, Kaos is suffering from 'blood stagnation' in Traditional Chinese Medicine...
Initially I have to give her an eighth of a 1ml spoon every other day for a week, for her to get used to the herbs, and then give them to her on a daily basis."

So now we have a baseline to work from taking into consideration the following patient specific information.

Kaos (patient):
weight:
age:
diagnosis: cardiomyopathy

As more general information about her case becomes available I will certainly integrate it with the information here.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS PLANT?

If you said Forsythia, you are WRONG!

No, actually you are right, but in Old Japanese this plant was known as Weasel Weed (itachi kusa, 鼬草).

I like Weasel Weed better. ^.^

Supportive Therapies: Buying Medicinal Herbs

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

In treating myself, I have worked with and come across numerous suppliers over the years. Here's a list of good online sites along some company quirks, herbal traditions, and how the herbs are offered.
The most commonly practiced Herbal Traditions are as follows, in order of years of practice: Chinese or TCM (4000 years), Indian or Ayurveda (2000+ years), and Western/European (300 years). Looking at this list you can see why I prefer the Chinese tradition of herbal medicine. I am sure Ayurveda is just as good, but TCM is what I started with living in Japan back in 2000 and I have no background in even the basis of Ayurveda. Correction, I know enough to know it is very different from TCM.

Western/European herbal medicine has been ignored and often ridiculed until recently under the massive weight of "western medical science". I have also found that in western herbology medicinal formulas tend to be heavily watered down to the point they are almost ineffective. A good, robust formula as the type you will find in TCM, should take no more than one month to see some effect. Depending of the formula and/or individual, eg for those of us who are extremely sensitive, effects can be felt within a week.

You can find out more about TCM and Ayurveda through the NIH website of National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Both TCM and Ayurveda are recognized by the World Health Organization as an effective, traditional health science.

There are multiple Formats in which herbs are processed and sold:

  • Liquid Extracts

  • Oils

  • Dry Extracts

  • Capsules

  • Powdered

  • Concentrated Powders (most commonly 5:1)

  • Tablets

  • Tea Pills (style strictly found in TCM)

  • Whole, Unprocessed

  • Again, in working with animals, they are listed from "easiest to use" to "hardest/avoid". Liquid extracts and oils are obviously the easiest to use because you can always use a dropper coated on the tip with Ferrotone to sucker them into taking the medicine. As a last resort, this form is usually easiest to mix straight into their food. You want to avoid that if possible. Refer to Administering LIQUID herbal formulas for tips and the reasoning behind it. The only thing you have to watch out for with oils and liquid extracts is what is the medium for carrying the herb? Is it an alcohol base or some other oil or the pure extract with no carrying medium? Ask before you purchase.

Dry Extracts are in a category of their own as these should be (if labeled correctly) dry extracts which are water-soluable. This means you used have to dissolve the amount you want in as much water as necessary to dissolve it. Provided you give the prescribed dosage, adding the water does not weaken the concentration. From then on you can just treat it as a Liquid Extract.

Capsules, Powdered, and Concentrated Powders fall into the third category of ease of use. Capsules I think can be the nicest because the are pre-measured to some extent and you can divide them down further from there. Typically, capsules are just gelatin capsules like Tylenol caps so they are very easy to open since they are just 2 halves pressed together. Powered types are the raw herb that has merely been reduced to a fine powder. Concentrated Powders are most commonly a 5:1 concentration meaning 1gm of the concentrate herb is equivalent to 5gm of the raw herb. It's just 5 times as strong. This is a good choice for humans, but for ferrets with their considerably smaller bodies, it would be a hassle. Sticking with the powdered or capsule form is less taxing on the brain. Another reason these 3 types are in this category is because a "liquid" form can be readily made from them. Refer back to Administering LIQUID herbal formulas for ideas on how to do so. I do not AT ALL recommend sprinkling the powdered herbs straight onto their food. The smell is too obvious to their super-noses and one can not be sure they are ingesting all of the necessary dose.

Tablets and Tea Pills (a type of tablet) are usually found in the realm of TCM formulas. If you are using a traditional Chinese formula in America, you will likely be using it in one of these forms. Although some herbs can be found in tablet form, tea pills are style strictly found in TCM. Basically, the ingredients of the TCM formula has been made into a concentrated tisane, dried and then formed into little tablets. There is no actual 'tea' in the pills. The problem with tea pills is that you have to be careful that you are purchasing non-sugar coated teapills. The default is a sugarcoating, not that it improves the taste any, just makes it easier to swallow. If you and your vet happen to find a formula that you want to use, for instance from the Cheryl Schwartz, DVM book Four Paws Five Directions, you will need to crush the pills down. Treat the powdered result the same as you would when dealing with Capsules, Powdered, or Concentrated Powders.

Whole, Unprocessed is the category you want to stay away from unless you are backed into the corner by snarling, ravenous ferrets. Even then I can't imagine how you would get them to eat it. (You would have to brew it into a dense tisane and then administer as a liquid.) This category contains herbs that are whole roots, bark, petals, antler, etc... Completely unprocessed. Fortunately, 99.9% of the herbs you want can be found in any of the above other forms.

Now on to the best part-SHOPPING!!

    ADDENDUM I

    About the SANJIU manufacturer's store:
If you notice, their order form is credit card only not even a Paypal option. Not only that they do not processing the order through "verisign" or similar online security systems. And for the finale, if you notice at the bottom of your browser (Firefox), there is no "this is a secure site" flag. I have been purchasing online for over 7 years so I did notice that and sent an inquiry regarding to which the reply was as follows:

Thank you for your email. Indeed, although our order page is not registered as a secure page, we can guaranteed that your credit card will only be used on your order billing and is 100% secure and will be erased after the transaction. We have been in business for over 7 years and we never have a problem with our online credit card payment. We shipping to US all the time through UPS and never had a problem.

Hope this helps ease your worry and looking forward to doing business with you. Thank you.

    Regards,
    Sanjiu Medical Center

So how do I feel about it now?
I will use them. IF I can't find what I need at East Earth Trade. At any rate, they are still an excellent reference site. Even if you can't read Chinese, if you click on the highlighted Chinese name a secondary window will pop up and the scientific name in English will be shown. You can then use that name to check out the herbal databases for more information and drug interactions.

    Preparation:
Dissolve the contents of one (1) package in ... boiling water. Cover and let stand for 2-3 minutes, during which time the cover should not be removed.
--How much boiling water you use is dependent on how much you want to weaken the extract or make it easier to use.

    Precautions:
    1. Do not dissolve granules in cold water
    2. Store in a cool, dry place such as a refrigerator.

    ADDENDUM II
    About Golden Flower Pills:
Out of all the "american producers" this is by far the most effective brand. Potent and high quality. Very similar to what I can find over here in Japan. They only sell pills so you will need to crush them then measure then administer. A hassle, but the quality is well worth it. However....
"DUE TO OUR DISTRIBUTOR AGREEMENT WITH GOLDEN FLOWER WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO OFFER GF FORMULAS FOR SALE ON OUR WEBSITE. TO ORDER GF FORMULAS PLEASE CALL 1-800-772-6320 OR SEND AN EMAIL TO info@spanda.com"

Tricks to Administering LIQUID herbal formulas

    UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
    Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

In giving medicines I have been worried about causing stress from the bad taste. And we are not just talking about the fuzz suffering here. Who of us out there has not had the experience of being sprayed in the face with the "nasty pink chalky-tasting stuff" (thank goodness I wear glasses) or piddled upon in the upmost form of retaliation??? (Viva Le Resitance!!)

Fortunately I have come across several suggestions that are worth trying out. I would like to present them here with my own ideas for all to hopefully benefit from.

    I. Without the help of Additives:

Liquid remedies such as herbs, homeopathics or flower essences may contain a small amount of alcohol as a preservative. Some animals are sensitive to the smell or taste of alcohol so you may wish to remove it; measure the dosage into a small vial or shot glass and let it sit out for 15-20 minutes to let the alcohol evaporate. Alternatively, drop the dosage into a small amount of heated water to speed the evaporation of the alcohol. The additional water will not affect the potency of the remedy. Don’t hesitate to put a couple drops of the remedy on your own tongue so you know what it tastes like – none of the liquid herbal or homeopathic remedies are in any way harmful for humans. It is best to use a dosing syringe or extra dropper to administer the diluted remedy to your pet so you do not contaminate the remedy bottle with bacteria from the animal's mouth.
( Clip taken from the Only Natural Pet store. )

II. With the help of Additives:

    FOOD:
Most herbal tinctures can be added to the food... If you have a fussy (pet) we suggest mixing the remedy with a bit of really yummy canned food or a treat. Canned tripe works well as it has a strong smell, ... re-hydrated freeze-dried treats and tuna juice also do the trick.
( Clip taken from the Only Natural Pet store. )

    SWEETENERS:

    Agave Nectar

Agave nectar comes from the Agave cactus. Although it does have "sugar", it is supposed to have a LOW GLYCEMIC INDEX and is therefore recommended for use by people with blood sugar problems. I use it myself for that reason and do not have the same trouble I do if I use honey or sugar. Also, it is 1.4~1.6 times as sweet as the equivalent amount of sugar so you technically need less to help with disguising bad tasting medicine.

Unfortunately, Agave NECTAR is such a new product it does not even turn up in the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference.

On the other hand, a user on the FHL shared this experience with using it:
"I also use Agave Nectar almost exclusively as a sweetener and my ferrets are always 'sharing' my food with me, and have had no bad side effects. They have not eaten it straight, but clearly seem to like the taste."

More importantly, it does not appear to be toxic to ferrets.

    Soymilk
Unfortunately it does have some sugar content, but being made from soy means no lactose to upset the stomach. You can see a picture of the troupe enjoying some salmon oil laced soy milk here. Also most soy milk is organic and is not packed with additives or other ingredients you can not pronounce. 2 good brands that I liked were 8th Continent (blue and white bottle) and SILK(red carton), both in regular ORIGINAL flavor only.

More importantly, soy isnot toxic to ferrets. It's the first ingredient in N Bones. Moderation is the key.

    Stevia
As to Stevia, I thought about that using this too since it has a gylcemic index of 0, meaning perfectly safe for users with blood sugar issues. It is made from the dried and powered Stevia leaf so completely natural with no additives unless you buy the 'white' powder. That is a chemical whiteness. However, there are two problems right up front. One problem being that the taste is so incredibly obnoxious. I found it is very 'fake' and chemical tasting in the most minute amounts. You would swear it is a companion of the artificial sweeteners.

Secondly and more importantly, its toxicity in ferrets is unknown.

    Xylitol
This was suggested to me on another board. Fortunately, I can not get it here. Why? Its toxicity in ferrets might be unknown, but it is toxic to dogs:

Xylitol has been the subject of a recent study that demonstrates the devastating power of a seemingly innocuous supermarket substance on the canine liver. Rimadyl, raw onions and Tylenol have nothing on this sweetener. It only takes a few cupcakes left unobserved on the kitchen counter to kill even a large dog. Your three-pound Yorkie? A fraction of one offered surreptitiously by a well-meaning guest might suffice.

We’ve known about this toxin for some time but it’s only recently that we’ve discovered a definitive connection between even small amounts of the product and deadly liver toxicity in dogs. Dogs just don’t have the liver enzymes necessary to deal with this particular molecule.

    Quote from Dolittler.

Dr. Dunayer had this to say, "... there appears to be a strong link between xylitol ingestions and the development of liver failure in dogs." Please read the full article about xylitol toxicity from the JAVMA. It may not be ferrets, but it is good enough reason for me to not even consider it.

    III. TIMING:

Most homeopathic remedies are best given at least 20 minutes before… a meal. Ideally there should be no food residue in the mouth. Drop the liquid directly into the animal's mouth or on the gums... If this proves impossible for your companion, then mix the remedy with a small amount of food or a treat.
( Clip taken from the Only Natural Pet store. )

It should be noted that giving herbal medicines 20+ minutes before any food is ingested has been standard operating procedure in over 3000 years of Chinese medicine, even for humans.

Although I will be posting the results and trials here on my blog, you can follow my several discussions on supportive therapies for lymphoma here at Natural Ferrets and the FHL: topic#1 and topic#2. Both require membership. Please also refer to the the Ferret Links - Medical section for websites dealing with herbal interactions and toxicity.

How to Feed WYSONG & AFS FD Cat Patties

    UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
    Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

I often find myself having to explain this, and since we are already on the topic of food, this seems as good a time as any to post it out in the open.

First, to give you a taste of the foods in question, please read the previous article.

The most important thing right off the bat is that you will need to add a little water and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Freeze-dried (FD) food is very dry. Nothing like trying to choke down a bowl of wood chips first thing in the morning.

I used both Wysong Archetype (previously known as Ferret Archetype-I) and AFS Cat Patties.

This is an example of that feeding schedule:

For the AFS patties, I would feed about half a one a day. Just break
one in half and then again and again into more "mouthable" pieces.
1-3 TB (tablespoons) of water should make a good consistency.

    SNACKY #1
    any combination of the following:

    - HALF a Chewy NBone.

    - FD beef, salmon, chicken bits as is or floated in their "pond". Also a great mental enrichment activity since they either have to be fast and co-ordinated enough to catch the bits floating on top, or have to dunk their heads underwater to catch the water logged pieces. FD bits are light enough to float on the water for a little while before sinking. Here you can also see kibble floating in an additional flat cup.

FD snacks can be found at any of the stores listed HERE. I have used and personally like onlynaturalpet.com .
N-Bone snacks can be found here at the ferret depot or here at the old FerretStore.

With The Wysong Archtype food, that is already pretty well broken up.
I used about 1/2 cup with only 1-2 TB of water.

    Pre-Bedtime, SNACKY #2
    any one of the following:

    - Some dashes of Salmon Oil (check your local health food store) in a special "plate", ie frisbee, specifically for that purpose. For texture variety I would sometimes sprinkle the crushed, powdery leftovers from the bag of the FD salmon.

    - You can also use chicken or beef broth but be careful how much you put in. If some gets greedy and step on the side of the dish, you might find floor and ferret smelling like soup.

    - Or for that very rare treat, soymilk.

I usually doled out the "goods" once in the morning and once in the evening with snacks in between. You can of course feed more or less depending on your fuzzy's appetite. Just look at the bowl and see what's left. Inevitably, they ate less overall in the summer. But if you just eyeball it everyday, there will be little waste. Meaning, if there were lots of leftovers on Monday (1/3-1/2 a serving leftover), then just feed less on Tuesday. If Tuesday's food is pretty well licked clean, then you can go back to the normal amount.

Pet Food Recall - other brands and home-cooking

    UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
    Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

I fear that lately this widespread and devastating problem seems to have slipped under the radars as the tide of daily life and problems have swept back in to fill our lives.

"Out of sight, out of mind".

But this does not mean the problem has gone away or even been corrected. In order to protect ourselves and our animal companions many people have considered undertaking home-cooking.

On the one hand, the AVMA does not support this because "pet nutrition is very complicated and unique to species and individual animals." .

On the other hand, they make this statement:
"If you are certain you wish to cook for your pet, the AVMA does recommend you first consult with your veterinarian and do some research on appropriate diets for your pet. A pet owner should only consider recipes for pet food that are developed for ..(their pet) by veterinarians or trained professionals in animal nutrition.

Dr. Tony Buffington, DVM, Ph.D., an Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine professor of clinical sciences and a member of the AVMA, agrees that preparing food for your pet can be tricky. In the event a pet owner is determined to make pet food at home, he recommends Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: the Healthful Alternative by Dr. Donald Strombeck as a good cookbook for pets. Dr. Buffington also recommends http://www.petdiets.com/ as one the best Web sites on home-cooked pet diets. "

    Full AVMA article here.

Additionally, Wysong Archetype (previously known as Ferret Archetype-I) and AFS Cat Patties are other safe products you can use in liu of home-cooking:
    Cat Pet Patties @ AFS
    Ferret Food @ Wysong

AFS does not have ferret-specific foods, but the cat food is well balanced especially in comparison with the specially formulated Wysong Archetype (previously known as Ferret Archetype-I) . As the AVMA has said before, just be informed and scrutinize the labels.

WINDOW SHOPPING - Online Japan Ferret Shops

    UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
    Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Even though you can not buy them and may not be able to read it, it is still fun to browse through all the beautiful artwork and goodies and get some ideas along the way. So with that in mind, here is a hand-held guide through the top online ferret shops in Japan, those being the ones that come to the National Championships:

    Show me! Show me!

    SHOPS:

Interferret Shop: One of the major sponsors of the JFA shows. The best and easiest description for Interferret is that it has all the variety that the old ferretstore.com had. The colorful tags at the top let you browse through all the sections. If you do not feel like clicking through all the the sections, here is a translated list, Left -> Right:

home - FOOD - TREATS - SUPPLIMENTS - OUTDOORS - HEALTH CARE - BODY & BEAUTY - HAMMOCKS ETC. - PLAY TOYS - FERRET GOODS FOR HUMANS - HOMES - CAGE ACCESSORIES - FASHION - SUMMER GOODS - OUTLET

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. Just about everything is a must see. Probably the most comprehensive online ferret store in Japan.

In addition to the store, you might want to visit this page brought to you by Interferret. The top half is directions to the store while the bottom portion with all the thumbnails are short ferret clips called "show breed introduction movies". The buttons to click look like this:

    Junk-mart
Yes, an unfortunate name. One day I will ask them why, but name aside, very friendly people with lots of goodies. To the left you will see in English "item list". Below that are links to these following sections:

    NEW ITEMS - CELL PHONE STRAPS - METAL PINS - POSTCARDS - STICKERS - NOTEPADS/BOOKS - TOTE BAGS - HAMMOCKS - BEDDING - TOYS - HANDY GOODS

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. HANDY GOODS has special sized hangers for your fuzzy clothing
. STICKERS has some of the cutest and cleverest stickers I have ever seen here. I personally have "Itachi Inside" on my laptop and "carnivorous" on my electronic dictionary. ("itachi" means weasel.)

    Tamura Norie's Knit Kits
Not an online store, but a popular vendor at the shows. This is the only site she lists since she does not sell online. It is a blog of her and her 2 ferrets, Koge and Kuma. There are always pictures of her knit goods and her fuzzies, so it makes for a nice visit.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. The knitted goods, especially the handknit ferrets.

Another very popular vendor with original goods. They have recently opened an online store as of April this year. And, not surprisingly, everything is sold out. The picture above is from that "sold out" section. There is nothing to shop for right now. ^.^ This is their blog where you can view many of their previous creations. Even better, click the gallery link shown on the left HERE and see some really amazing works from 2006 and HERE for 2007!

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. Famous for her oven-baked clay ferret figures which are often featured in JFA's postcards. These are an absolute MUST see.

    Ferret-ya
Currently they are updating so links to the goods are down. As always, I will continue to check and post the direct links as they become available.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. Have the absolutely best aprons and tote bags. (as many of the American Judges will attest to.~.^ )

    The Old Weasel Lady
Not an online store, but another vendor at the shows. This is the only site she lists since she does not sell online. It is a blog of her and her 2 ferrets. There is always lots pictures of her painted goods and her fuzzies, so it makes for a nice visit.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. All her ferret related posts can he found HERE

    LaLa's Factory
Online clothing store. They were at the 16th Championship, but they had no handouts (or ran out). Fortunately, going through older files this morning, I found their card in with the 15th Championship so I was able to add them too!
After you click "Enter" on the top page, the store front will open. On the left are the categories. Although the sell other goods and have many "brands", they are mainly known for their handmade clothes. The categories from the top left until "Other Goods" are as follows:

TOP - Site Map - How to Order - Regarding Sizes - About our store

BROWN BOX with "Clothes on Sale" as a header

VESTS - LONG VESTS- BANDANNAS - MUFFLERS & NECK PIECES - DRESSES - JAPANESE STYLE PIECES - COLD WEATHER PIECES - HAWAIIAN - COUNTRY - NAMEABLE - MATCHING SETS - STRAWBERRY KIDS (brand) - COSTUMES

BROWN BOX with "Other Goods" as a header

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. Clothes. Clothes. and more Clothes! Everything is nice here, though.

    Faru's Forest
Another online store. Faru's specializes in cell phone straps and little home decorations also made of clay. They warn that these are particularly delicate though.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
. The ferrets in the dessert dish are very cute. The dessert is a popular summer dish called "anmitsu".

    Gimme! Gimme!

Although 95% of retailers in Japan will not ship overseas, apparently, you can now request items through this store, Crescent Shop. I have never used it, so I can not speak for how it works or how good it is. What I can offer is a way to try and lower your S/H costs. They may say, "Forget it. It's our way or the highway, baby.", but it is worth a try to try to get them to change their Shipping.

    SHIPPING:
As with most things, there are options. And although EMS is well-known, it is not the only way to ship from Japan. Matter of fact, I NEVER ship EMS unless a client requests it.

    Shipping Options:
EMS: strictly airmail. As such, it is expensive, but fast.
SAL: a mixture of sea and air shipping. Takes 2-3 weeks, or twice as long as EMS (1/2 as long as Funabin.)
FUNABIN: strictly sea mail. As such, it is cheap and slow. Runs around 4-6 weeks to get your goodies.

I personally prefer and recommend SAL.
