RESCUE SERVICES FOR FERRETS

Sadly, most countries don't acknowledge animals as having any status or worth more than that of being a possession. Even in the US, we're still struggling to at least get the same minimal rights for ferrets that dogs and cats now receive. However, even if the governments aren't interested, you can always count on individual groups to step up and help those that need it!

Here are the top two North American Organizations. Regardless of the language or country, if you know of any other international rescue groups that will assist ferrets please post a comment so it can be added. But before you call on others, the most critical thing you yourself can do is BE PREPARED!

F.E.R.R.E.T.

The Ferret Emergency Response, Rescue and Evacuation Team F.E.R.R.E.T. will support and assist EARS and other humane and disaster response organizations in time of disaster.

F.E.R.R.E.T. WILL ASSIST IN:
* locating ferrets at risk
* securing temporary or permanent housing
* transportation to safe locations
* supplies such as food, bedding, cages and accessories
* securing appropriate medical care
* providing disaster preparedness information and resources to caregivers, veterinarians and volunteers.

EARS (the Emergency Animal Rescue Service)

The following summary and comments are by Susanne Thiel, EARS' New York State Coordinator:
EARS (the Emergency Animal Rescue Service) assists all kinds of animals in all kinds of disaster situations. In addition to being able to respond to disasters nationwide and help all kinds of animals, I'm really excited by the opportunity to help get rescued ferrets the food, medical care, housing and other supplies they need.

EARS is currently working with the HSUS, ASPCA, American Humane Association, Best Friends, FEMA, the Red Cross and others to formally and comprehensively incorporate animals into disaster response plans at the local, regional, state and national levels.

EARS also assists with hoarding, disease outbreaks and cruelty cases.

Ferrets in Japanimation - again

Ferrets or their relatives have appeared several times in recent Japanese manga (like American comics, but of higher quality) and anime (again, like American animation, but of higher quality).

For your viewing pleasure, please enjoy a sample from a current TV series. ^.^
It's a really silly series, but anything with a ferret in it, much less a TALKING ferret, is worth watching to me.

MAGICAL GIRL LYRICAL NANOHA
Plot Summary: Yuuno Scraia is a mage from a distant planet working to fix the problem he started when Jewel Seeds were accidentally spread around the world. In a failed attempt to seal a seed properly, he winds up on Earth in the form of a ferret. However, his battle with the seeds did not end upon reaching the Earth and he needs somebody else's help to seal the seeds for him. Takamachi Nanoha hears his telepathic cries for help and comes to his rescue.
It make take a minute or 2 for the video to load after you hit play. Just hit pause and wait for half of the bar to turn red before hitting play again. :)

RULE CHANGES and a personal take on them

LIKES:

CHANGE: DISTEMPER SHOTS

They're really pushing for distemper-awareness.

CHANGE: THREE CALL RULE
They are instituting a rule where your entry number is called at most 3 times. If you don't show up by the third time, you're out.
We really got stuck waiting last time, although I partially blame that on the incessant Yanni background music-it was louder than it needed to be.

CHANGE: NEW JUDGING RULES FOR CHAMPAGNES
Champagne colored ferrets are becoming more common and as a result have laid down more formalized rules for distinguishing and categorizing them.
Reasonable; and besides, Champagnes RULE.

DISLIKES:

CHANGE: NO WATER ALLOWED

I really don't like that them insist that the food AND water be removed from the cage when a ferret is brought to the judges.
The food, yes, I can understand, but the water is arguable. Every decent manual states that ferrets should have access to food and water around the clock.
Many of the ferrets wait for 20-30 minutes just to see one judge and THEN go on down the line to see another judge in another ring where they might yet another 20 or 30 or 40 minutes.
An attached water bottle does not leak too much, so I can't really see what harm it is in allowing that. After all, they are already so very stressed between the actual event-all the noise and lights and strange smells-and the traveling they went through to get there. Why add more stress?
On the other hand, it should be noted that they clearly state later on that all ferrets at the show should have access to clean food and water while there. It's just they want it removed when they are brought to the judges.

CHANGE: NO HAMMOCKS!
Our table of judges didn't have any problems with hammocks, at least I didn't hear any when sitting right there the whole time.
I can't agree with the removal of hammocks when it is such a simple comfort to provide, a place they can dive into and feel secure.
Then there is the very real problem of "where's the potty?"
--On the floor level--
So if the bathroom is on the floor and so is their one and ONLY sleeping area, what happens when the bedding gets soiled?
Like I said above: Many of the ferrets wait for 20-30 minutes just to see one judge and THEN go on down the line to see another judge in another ring where they might another 20 or 30 or 40 minutes.
It seems really unfair to force them to sleep in a dirty cage when a hammock would provide them with a clean sleeping area.
Besides, Judges will then have to handle the dirty, stinky fuzzies!
