Prezzies! Toys!! PAPER!!!!!

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls

☆.。.:*・Christmas Prezzies!☆Christmas Prezzies!!!・*:.。.☆

Naturally, nothing is more fun to a ferret than something NEW, even the faux-New, like old toys with new smells applied or old toys recycled in some way.

And just like a cat, better than the present is the box!!! it came in. Especially if said box has lots of crinkly paper.

But between all the super cool boxes!, new !smells!, and giant balls of wrapping PaPEr, we got some very noteworthy gifts.

Probably it is more for the hooman-slave, but our big gift this year was a homemade piece by Team Crusher that traveled all the way from across the pond.

First we test for fluff density.

Then we notice the PaPEr it came in.

During this time, hooman-slave has opportunity to set up and take a picture of the full (unobstructed) view.

Finally, we check the internal amenities.

Thinking of one for yoursel...err, your fuzz?
Then please contact Team Crusher @ Crusher's Comforts.

Happy Holidays and see you again! (^_-)-♪

Ferret Show Japan!

  \(^o^)/ \(^o^)/ \(^o^)/ \(^o^)/
WOW!!!!

Ok, now that is out of my system.

In tweeting along meeting other Ferret-slaves in Japan I ran into an old favorite, Junk*Mart -- the unfortunately named store with lots of cute ferret goods I would often come across @ the JFA shows.

Naturally, I immediately messaged them with the question of whether the would be @ the 2011 JFA Spring Show.

Their response was immediate (given the current 13 hour time difference): Attendance @ the JFA Show is still undecided but we will be attending the Yokohama FereFesu .(Ferret Festival).

Which led be to in turn immediately look up that in information.
In doing so I discovered the existence of a WHOLE OTHER FERRET GROUP in Japan!!

Introducing....

The Spring Ferret Festival will be March 6, 2011 (Sunday).
The location is the APITA Hiyoshi Building, 3rd floor, in Yokohama city's North Minato district. Not surprisingly, like everything else in Japan, conviently close to a train line - the Touyoko Line, Hiyoshi Station.

A much smaller event than the JFA, the doors don't even open until 10:30 and close @ 4:00. The entry fee is nominal @ 500 yen (under 5 USD) which includes a game and raffle ticket. Just from reading the introduction page, it seems to be more of a giant play-date/get together. For the human-slaves there are pictures and photo contests, a best-dressed competition and lots of shopping with store fronts like Junk*Mart. For the furry-masters there are "play circles" and "corn chip" pools, and games including the infamous Tube Race and Escape! .

Want to know MORE?!

Well, should you have any further questions they invite you to

Incidentally, I will be in Japan by then so hopefully I can scrape up the money and time to get there and see for myself.

Cheers and see you again! (^_-)-♪

Cookie Cutters are...

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

☆.。.:*・RANDOM CARPETSHARKING☆SPEEDBUMPING・*:.。.☆

Cookie cutter are absolutely for cookies.
And only cookies as my recent experiment has shown me.

Ferret Depot was (is?) offering a free ferret cookie cutter with orders this month. So with our last purchase of food in America we got one, too!

Between the havoc it would wreck on my back and the fact that wheat-free cookies are never the same as the sweet, sweet real stuff, I don't make roll-out cookies anymore.

I do make pancakes quite a bit though.

Hmmmm.... Maybe...?

Rather Nessie-ish actually.

So the second time I sprayed the cutter - heavily - and put the burner on super-low.

It took 15 minutes or more to cook!
Whatever it was it was f.o.r.e.v.e.r.
That tiny little thing!
As a result, this is one copper cutter that will be hanging from the Xmas tree from now on.

Cheers and see you again! (^_-)-♪

Recycling 101 : TOYS

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Running out of Last minute ideas for XMAS gifts??
Nothing like recycling! (Especially if you are like me and have no creative talents to knit or sew things.)
Nice and new for the fuzz-head. Nice for the environment (and pocket).
All that is needed is few items you surely have around.

1. old sock(s).
Worn out (no holes!), Halloween leftovers, ... Anything will do really.

2. worn out mini tennis balls with jingle inside
or old jingles from the ricky-ticky-tavy snake.

3. old cat crinkle balls (squashed down from chewing)

recommended: old helium balloon or similar crinkly yet STRONG material.

Now, stuff sock randomly, tie up the end and....

FIN!

☆.。.:*・RANDOM CARPETSHARKING☆COMMENTS・*:.。.☆

* Stuffing multiple socks with all the above materials or some combination of 2 will also naturally make for toys will slightly different 'flavors'.

* Personally, I HIGHLY recommend adding the crinkle-like material for several reasons. first and foremost, it crinkles. Secondly, I like to wrap up the old tennis balls (plastic jingle bells) in them just to provide a little extra protection.

Natural Food shopping in Japan

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

As we are looking forward to move back to Japan (with a one-way ticket), first thing on my mind?
FOOD!!

More specifically, where to get good food for the fuzz.
We are big fans of AFS and Wysong in the USA.
Even without previous experience, one can not reasonably assume they are everywhere. (Life in Korea is hard for people and ferrets particularly in the realm of food options.)

AFS does not exist in Japan.
And probably can never hope for them to. But I will speak to the great guys @ FBC who are miracle workers @ getting all kinds of food imports from America to Japan. It will take time for them to confer with and get an answer back from their distributors in Los Angles, but if there is good news, I am sure to post it. (^_-)

Wysong, on the other hand, has gotten their foot in the door from several years back. As such I am listing several reliable, long-living sites for purchase below:

* Viva Ferret has existed as a community and store for a long time.
You can get both types of Wysong and Evo Ferret through them. Naturally, it's monsterously expensive. Money well spent 4 good health as far as I am concerned though.

* Genki Itachi, or "Happy Healthy Weasel" is a store totally dedicated to supporting the BARF diet and homemade food diet for ferrets. They, too, sell Wysong.

* Interferret, one of the largest most well-known online retailers of ferret goods and 'home-grown' ferrets, used to offer Wysong, but they have been out for awhile. I don't know if they are going to discontinue it or are just waiting for a new shipment. Needs watching.

* Koiwa Pet is another longstanding citizen of the Japanese pet supply stores. However, they only carry the Evo ferret.

* Rakuten Ichiba is a general, reliable online market. You can sometimes get Wysong here.

* One Step from Paradise is a private site that seems to offer Wysong, amoung others. Needs confirmation first. Under the links tab though there is a great collection to many other natural feeding support and learning sites.

This is, unfortunately, it 4 now.
BUT!
We shall continue our search as NO fuzz shall EVER go hungry!!!

Once AGAIN, Carpet Sharking in all the Wrong Places

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Not as bad as you think. No GIANT Ticks to report or anything.
Just itching.
And itching.
And itching!

We all know fuzzies are itchy critters, but this was more scratching than I have seen any of the previous family (5) do. EVER.
And two of them had adrenal.

But during our daily tick-inspections, I have consistently noticed red bumps, slightly irritated looking and slightly raised.
As they do not look like any of the (few) pictures of ferret tumors I have found, I have unilaterally decided that ferts get bug bites just like the rest of us when slogging through the untamed wilds.

That is all good and well, yet does nothing to resolve the itching which seems intolerable and in some places seems to have caused minor scabbing over.

That's where Children's Benadryl comes in.

Oddly enough, no search of the FHL turned up any useful dosage information. There were articles suggesting using Children's Benadryl for this or that issue, but no measurements.

Fortunately, I came upon this, compliments of the Loving Ferrets Forum:

"Children's Benadryl (12.5mg/5mL) is given at 0.5-2mg/kg orally bid or tid (two or three times per day).

One teaspoon is about 5 mL
12.5/5 gets to 2.5 mg per mL
Since the amounts given are usually multiples of a tenth of the mL, 0.1 mL has 0.25 mg of Benadryl. So, 0.2 mL has 0.5mg, 0.3 mL has 0.75 mg, 0.4 mL has 1.0 mg of Benadryl by weight, etc.

(Since your ferret weighs 2.5 lbs, that is just a bit over 1kg.)
Therefore, the dose for your ferret will be about 0.25mL to 0.8mL every 8-12 hours.
I would start at the lowest dose of 0.25mL and increase as needed."

Cheers and see you again! (^_-)-♪

Repeat after me, "I am Not an OMNIVORE!"

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

Recently on one of marathon hikes in the woods, Ranmaru found a fallen, rotting tree - small trunk and broken open. He started scratching at the blackish insides, almost a mulch-like consistency but more packed together. I thought he was playing in it but then I saw him biting and pulling off pieces - stringy pieces.

And eating them
??!?

I thought maybe it might be termites in there since I know some ferts will eat bugs, but upon inspection, I couldn't see any bugs just blackish tree innards.

And today again he was investigating one of his renovated 'homes' (burrows) in the cliff. Normally, he spends his time digging out any new leafage, but today he was back there.
・・・
And back there.
・・・
And just sitting Back There.
・・・

So I squeaked for him to come out which he did...licking his chompers.
Saw the same blackish stuff on his molars when I made him yawn to investigate the inside.

It hasn't seem to have affected his eating or activity or bowel habits.

Also, in our continued outings, I have seen other odd related behavior.
He will suddenly stop, sniff around wildly at the ground, then dig up a small patch which inevitably reveals dark soil and stringy roots which he immediately commences feasting upon.
(These are not directly close to any tree stumps.)

What is this stuff??!?
Ferret-Pot?!

I am just intensely curious why he should be so crazy for it and what it is.
IF YOU KNOW OR HAVE ANY THEORIES, please leave a note in the comments section.

Cheers and see you again! (^_-)-♪

ticks !?!

UPDATES on Ferret Food Recalls
Responses from Whole/Natural Prey Suppliers

CARPETSHARKING in all the wrong places

Out of the 6 fuzzbutts in the family to date, one girl would enjoy standing on the balcony to watch the outside, the cars and whatnot but that was IT. That was her limit for interacting with the Great Outdoors.
If it suddenly got too much, it was mad-dash-INSIDE~~! RUN! *panicpanicpanic* BREAK FOR COVER!!!

Another, my big brave boss-girl did enjoy the outdoors. Around the yard, the apartment. When she had enough, it was up the sleeve and look out through the cuff. o.0 (Which made it really hard to bend my arm so that never lasted very long - having to walk around with one arm outstretched.)

My current youngest is a HIKER. One hour in the woods is no more that a walk in the park. Try more like one and a half or even two hours for him. o.0

We came back after a happy, leisurely meander Saturday morning and after about 10 minutes I had found and picked off about 15 ticks.
Maybe I had them all, or maybe I didn't because when we went out again on Monday morning I found him covered AGAIN.
I picked off what I could see that day including the larval stage ones which are about the size (or smaller) than a beauty mark.
We didn't go out Tuesday morning because Tuesday morning I found THIRTEEN MORE (larval stage) to remove!

Before you get too petrified and start thinking about shaving your head, be assured that according to the ALDF "Deer ticks cannot jump or fly, and do not drop from above onto a passing animal. Potential hosts (which include all wild birds and mammals, domestic animals, and humans) acquire ticks only by direct contact with them." Good news for you, not so for the wandering fuzz since "the best precaution ... is to avoid contact with soil, leaf litter and vegetation as much as possible."

And from experience I can tell you those are EXACTLY the places they make a beeline for.

First and foremost, a common misconception needs to be addressed.

*
Revolution kills fleas, prevents heartworm, and other etc. (** see addendum below)
* Advantage mainly just kills fleas.

Beyond that, knowledge is your best defense.
So before heading out again, arm yourself appropriately.

General need-to-know information and pictures:

* American Lyme Disease Foundation (ALDF)
They have some pictures here, but the wealth of information is in their signs and symptoms and infected US areas - maps and statistics. (Note: Map uses data current as of 2006. )

* National Geographic
Note the unusual appearance of the adult deer tick. Not what we as humans are used to picking off our clothes.
"Significantly smaller than the more commonly encountered dog tick, adult female deer ticks are about as big as a sesame seed and have reddish hind bodies with black dorsal markings. Males are slightly smaller than females and are solid dark brown."

In regards to the dreaded and debilitating Lyme disease (which had me frantically calling my vet and posting for help on FB), do note that it takes FRONTLINE an unspecified number of hours to kill off all ticks yet the ticks "must remain attached for at least 24 hours for the bacteria to transmit." (National Geographic, Frontline )

A slight inconsistency in transmission-time should be addressed.
According to the ALDF "... studies of infected deer ticks have shown that they begin transmitting Lyme disease an average of 36 to 48 hours after attachment."
Again, even though that seems to give you a window of safety with FRONTLINE killing them off within some unspecified number of hours, the transmission time given by the ALDF is clearly marked as an average. In other words, IF YOU ARE LUCKY, LD is not transmitted before FRONTLINE kills the ticks off.

So don't feel you can rest easy just because you are using FRONTLINE.
If you find a tick, remove it ASAP!!
Then search for more.
And search again.

Because before you know it they are laying pathetically at the door signaling time-to-go! again

Cheers and see you again! (^_-)-♪

**ADDENDUM
There has been some confusion generated about Revolution.
Pfizer clearly states through their official website that "Revolution controls tick infestations only due to the American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis), a tick commonly found on dogs. There are other common species of ticks that are not killed or controlled by Revolution."
You as the ferret owner are not concerned about dog ticks.
You are concerned about the other common tick species that are not killed or controlled by Revolution.
